No. A cleaning (prophylaxis) removes surface plaque and tartar. Periodontal treatment (scaling and root planing) works below the gumline, where bacteria that cause gum disease actually live.
It's done under local anesthesia when there's sensitivity or deep periodontal pockets, so the procedure is well tolerated. There may be mild tenderness afterward.
It depends on your initial diagnosis — generally every 3 to 6 months for patients with a history of gum disease. We'll define the right interval for you at your assessment.
Periodontitis is controlled and stabilized with treatment and ongoing maintenance; bone loss that has already occurred isn't fully reversed, which is why early diagnosis matters so much.
